When Do I Need Addiction Help?

What is Addiction?

An addiction forms when a person uses a substance or engages in a behavior excessively. Mainly for the rewarding effects it provides, or the compelling incentive to repeat the activity, despite detrimental consequences.  As a result, an addiction is formed as the person is unable to quit or stop the behavior.

Addiction may involve using substances such as alcohol, inhalants, opioids, cocaine, and nicotine. Likewise, addiction can also include behavioral activities such as pornography, sex, technology, social media, gambling, and gaming systems. Any of excessive use, patterns, or social activities may sound like an addiction, but is it?

In the case of addiction, a person will typically negatively respond if they don't get their "reward." For example, a person addicted to caffeine may experience physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms such as extreme headaches and irritability.

If you feel you may have an addiction or problems with stopping or quiting a behavior. We can help you assess the problem today! There is hope for recovery.

How Does Addiction Recovery Work?

Professional therapy and treatments may help substance and behavioral forms of addiction.

The best addiction recovery is to begin by creating a detailed plan with your therapist. Likewise, this plan will also include multiple aspects of a person's life. For example, any past trauma, abuse, or other mental health issues contribute to the addiction's root. As a result, your therapist will recommend treatments based on your needs. Each recovery plan design helps guide a person to quit and stop engaging in the addictive behavior.

Popular therapies shall include:

  • Drugs for psychiatric illnesses such as depression or schizophrenia
  • Psychotherapy, including interpersonal, chat, and group therapy.
  • Health care to help treat severe effects of addiction, such as withdrawal during detoxification
  • Addiction Case Manager, to help organize and track ongoing care
  • Hospital alcohol therapy
  • Groups of self-help and assistance
  • Trauma Counseling
  • EMDR/ Accelerated Resolution Therapy

You may also need to visit your primary care physician for an examination. The type of medication that the doctor recommends depends on the degree and stage of the addiction. The doctor can prescribe medication and counseling for the early stages of addiction. Later stages may benefit from treatment of inpatient addiction in a controlled environment.

Are There Stages of Addiction?

Addiction typically has four stages. How your brain and body react at the early stages of addiction are different from reactions later.

The four general stages of addiction are as follows:

  • Experimentation: use or participate out of curiosity
  • Social or regular: use or participation increases to everyday social behavior or social situations;
  • Issue or risk: uses or engages in extreme or risky conditions, regardless of the consequences.
  • Dependence: uses or participates in actions regularly, or many times a day, despite potential adverse effects.

How Are Addictions Formed?

Experts agree that frequent and early exposure to addictive drugs and behavioral habits plays a significant role. According to the American Addiction Medicine Society, genetics also raises the risk of addiction by around 50 percent. Likewise, just because addiction is in the family doesn't necessarily mean that a person will develop one. Also, a person's environment and culture often play a role in how a person reacts to a substance or habits. The absence or disruption of a person's social support system may lead to drug or behavioral dependency. Traumatic events that impair coping skills can also lead to addictive behaviors.

Why do addictions form instantly for some and not for others?

Some people may try a drug or activity and never return to it again, while others may become instantly addicted. This "hook" state is partly due to the frontal lobes of the brain. The frontal lobe helps an individual to postpone reward or gratification. For example, with addiction, the frontal lobe malfunctions, and pleasures are immediate.

Additional brain areas can also play a role in a person's addiction. Any section of the brain associated with pleasant stimuli can increase a person's response when exposed to addictive substances and behaviors.

Other potential causes of dependency include chemical imbalances in the brain and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. These conditions can contribute to strategies for dealing with addictions.
